MADISON, Wis. (AP) - A southeastern Wisconsin historical site will host a Civil War encampment this month.

Old World Wisconsin plans to transform its 19th-century settler village into a Virginia town caught in the middle of the war during an event dubbed “Civil War Encounters: Gone for a Soldier” the weekend of Aug. 23.

Visitors can enlist in the famed Iron Brigade, a unit of soldiers from Wisconsin, Indiana and Michigan, wear uniforms, taste the soldiers’ food, carry wooden muskets and participate in drills.

They’ll also get see a surgeon work at a full-scale Army field hospital as well as watch musket demonstrations and soldiers build a wooden barricade known as an abatis and play the role of a Confederate spy.

Old World Wisconsin is located just outside Eagle.
