LAKEWOOD, Calif. (AP) - A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy remains hospitalized after being assaulted as he responded to a fight at a shopping mall.

Sheriff’s officials said early Sunday that the deputy is in critical but stable condition. His name has not been released.

The incident happened Friday night at a mall in Lakewood, where a man and woman were fighting.

According to the sheriff’s office, as the deputy escorted the man away, he hit the deputy on the back of the head and kicked him while he was on the ground.

A bystander pushed the alleged assailant, identified as 21-year-old Frankie Estrada, away. He was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder of a police officer and held on $1 million bail.
