GREENWOOD, Miss. (AP) - The Leflore County Board of Supervisors has agreed to contribute $13,000 in county money toward events and programs at Mississippi Valley State University.

The Greenwood Commonwealth reported (https://bit.ly/1rvwkGS) the donations include $5,000 toward the university’s presidential inauguration in October, $2,000 to support the university foundation’s Homecoming Classic golf tournament and $6,000 to help the football program.

The supervisors voted unanimously to authorize the money.

Mississippi Valley State football coach Rick Comegy told supervisors the school’s football program is desperately short of resources.

He said coaches are paying for socks for players and drinks designed to help players avoid dehydration.

“I got my knee pads on if I need to get down and beg,” Comegy said during his Aug. 10 presentation to supervisors.

Earlier in August, the Greenwood City Council voted to give Comegy $5,000 to support his program.

The coach, in his first year at the university, said he’s trying to build community support for the team.

“I’m out right now trying to put butts in the seats,” Comegy said.
