NORTHFIELD, Vt. (AP) - Vermont’s Norwich University, the nation’s oldest private military college, is welcoming 546 new members of its Corps of Cadets.

Activities for the military students begin Sunday, three days ahead of orientation for civilian students. The first-year military students, called Rooks, will be welcomed by university President Richard Schneider at 1:30 Sunday and then have seven minutes with their families before marching to the Upper Parade Ground to begin their training.

During their first week, the Rooks will be issued uniforms, taught to set up their rooms and to march in formation. They also must learn and recite important facts about the school’s history and honor code.
