ALEXANDRIA, La. (AP) - Despite having a large commuter population, Louisiana State University of Alexandria had more than 300 students move into The Oaks Residence Hall.

Angela Reed, director of housing/residence life, tells The Town Talk (https://townta.lk/1pXGaSJ ) the on-campus apartments were almost at capacity Monday with 302 students on move-in day. Reed says she expected to fill the last two spots by the end of the week. Capacity was increased from 252 last year by adding bunk beds to many rooms.

Those moving in to their new campus home represented different ages, classifications, sports and majors. Some represented other countries, as the school has several international students this year, Reed said.

She and her staff handed out keys and information as students entered the lobby Monday morning. LSUA soccer players were on hand to help families unload vehicles and carry items into rooms.

Kailey Harper, 18, and her parents came from Lafayette to move the freshman into the apartment she’ll be sharing with three other girls.

“That’s gonna be interesting,” Harper said with a laugh. “I haven’t shared a room with someone since I was in third grade.”

The oldest of three siblings, Harper said the transition seemed to be hardest for her mom.

“She cried a week before (high school) graduation,” she said. “I can’t imagine what she’s gonna do when she leaves (today).”

Luv Blackburn, 20, and Gabby Landry, 18, met for the first time on Monday when they unpacked their stuff into the room they’ll share this semester. They hadn’t intended to have bunk beds, but the single rooms were full when they registered.

“We’ll make it work,” said Landry, a freshman from Baton Rouge.

Classes at LSUA start Aug. 25.
