PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The Newport Jazz Festival is halfway through its 60th anniversary celebration at Fort Adams.

The historic event was the first outdoor jazz festival and has played host to some of the most famous acts and memorable performances in jazz.

The three-day festival began Friday and is scheduled to play out on three stages on 45 sets of jazz. Saturday’s lineup includes Wynton Marsalis playing with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. Also playing are Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue, as well as Dave Holland Prism with Kevin Eubanks, Craig Taborn and Eric Harland.

On Saturday morning, as the music kicks off, they’re holding a symposium with participants including Harvard’s Henry Louis Gates Jr. They plan to discuss jazz in 1954, when the festival started, and today.

Tickets are still available for Saturday and Sunday’s performances.
