BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say a North Carolina man has drowned on the South Carolina coast.

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office tells local media outlets that the Tuesday accident claimed the life of 50-year-old Matthew Auten of Swannanoa, North Carolina.

Authorities say both the Lady’s Island and Fripp Island fire departments responded at about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday to a report of three people stranded on sandbar off Harbor and Hunting Islands.

When they arrived, they found Auten’s wife and two children and were told Auten was missing. His body was recovered on Harbor Island a short time later.

Coroner Ed Allen says Auten drowned.
