FORT SMITH, Ark. (AP) - Fort Smith officials have announced the city will use a $1.8 million grant to add fluoride to its water system.

The Southwest Times Record (https://bit.ly/1mraFNh ) reports city officials authorized the execution of a fluoride grant agreement between Fort Smith and the Delta Dental of Arkansas Foundation. The grant will fund fluoridation equipment and storage buildings for the fluoride.

The grant stipulates that Fort Smith complete the project within 18 months.

The city expects to spend about $100,000 each year on the project.

In 2011, the state passed a law requiring water systems serving at least 5,000 people to add fluoride to its public supply. The law applies to 34 systems in Arkansas.
