SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Law enforcement officers in Salt Lake County have seized 31 pounds of heroin since April.

The Metro Narcotics Task Force on Thursday announced 21 arrests related to the seizures in that time period. The unit includes officers from nine agencies.

County District Attorney Sim Gill and Attorney General Sean Reyes Thursday said officials face growing heroin abuse and related crimes in Utah. Gill stressed treatment programs as a key tool in cutting down on repeat drug offenses.

Gill says heroin use has spiked in recent years as authorities crack down on prescription drug abuse.

Salt Lake City Police Chief Chris Burbank says Bank robberies have tripled in Salt Lake County in the past two years. He tells the Salt Lake Tribune (https://bit.ly/1ohvx9i) many such arrests are linked to heroin addiction.
