BANGOR, Maine (AP) - The three-day American Folk Festival is underway with a variety of acts ranging from a folk band from Iran to Grammy-nominated guitarist Bill Kirchen.

The festival kicked off Friday night on the Bangor waterfront and continued through the weekend.

This year’s acts include the rhythmical West African HighLife Band, a Vietnamese duo that uses bamboo to make music, and an Iranian band that uses percussion, bagpipes and flute. Other acts include local favorite Kirchen, along with Quebec trio Bon Debarras, Cajun band Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys, Cuban-Canadian singer-songwriter Adonis Puentes and the Voice of Cuba Orchestra.

The American Folk Festival grew out of the National Folk Festival hosted in Bangor from 2002 to 2004. Residents enjoyed it so much that they launched their own folk festival.
