CHICAGO (AP) - After hiding in Poland for years, a suspect in a fatal 2004 drunken driving crash in Chicago is being held without bond.

Andrzej Rybka appeared Friday before a Cook County Circuit Court judge on allegations he fled the scene after the car he was driving slammed into a pole, ejecting and killing Jozef Maryniarczyk and Anna Jaronczyk, both 18.

Rybka is charged with reckless homicide and leaving the scene of an accident that caused injury or death,

Authorities say two days after the crash the 31-year-old Rybka fled to Poland, where he married and had children.

Assistant State’s Attorney Robert Mack says efforts to extradite Rybka began in 2004, but Polish authorities didn’t approve the request until this year.

Assistant Public Defender Marijane Placek asserts the crash was “an accident.”
