HERNANDO, Miss. (AP) - DeSoto County supervisors have approved a $254,000 patrol/law enforcement increase requested by Sheriff Bill Rasco to buy 19 new vehicles that would replace aging cruisers with more than 160,000 miles.

Monday’s request reflected a sharp decrease from Rasco’s original plea two weeks ago for a $950,000 hike that included several more patrol officers, including a helicopter pilot.

The Commercial Appeal reports (https://bit.ly/1qJ171g ) the supervisors are faced with having to make numerous departmental cuts as they try to craft a tight fiscal 2015 budget in the face of flat revenues.

The supervisors must have a county budget approved by Sept. 15. At the start of Monday’s all-day session, proposed total expenditures were at $112.5 million, a 2.72 percent decrease from the fiscal 2014 budget.
