PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island health officials have recommended the closure to swimming of a beach in Newport because of bacteria in the water.

The state Department of Health on Tuesday said it had found elevated bacteria levels at King Park Beach and urged swimmers to avoid the water.

Officials will recommend the beach be re-opened to swimming after the bacteria counts fall to acceptable levels. The department monitors water quality throughout the summer months to ensure that conditions are safe for swimmers.
