OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Former state Sen. Steve Russell has won the Republican nomination for central Oklahoma’s 5th Congressional District.

Russell defeated Corporation Commission member Patrice Douglas in Tuesday’s runoff election for the GOP nomination. Russell faces Democratic state Sen. Al McAffrey in the Nov. 4 election.

Russell was one of six Republicans who sought their party’s nomination in the June 24 primary election. No candidate received more than 50 percent of the vote, forcing the runoff.

Russell is seeking the seat being vacated by Republican Rep. James Lankford, the Republican nominee for an open U.S. Senate seat.

Russell is a retired Army lieutenant colonel who served in the state Senate from 2008 to 2012 after a more than 20-year Army career.
