BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - The state is delaying plans to shut down prime parking spots near Birmingham’s civic center, but only briefly.

For years people attending concerts and other events at the civic center and coliseum have parked in lots underneath Interstate 20/59.

But the state says the area is no longer safe because of the age of the interstate bridges. It’s shutting down the parking spaces to vehicles.

The state was set to terminate the parking agreements on Monday, but it’s giving local leaders an eight-day extension. The shutdown comes as a new entertainment district has opened nearby.

The state says the parking area will remain closed until early 2018. The state says it will install fencing to block access to current parking areas.
