OYSTER BAY, N.Y. (AP) - The state Department of Environmental Conservation says three shellfishing areas on the north shore of Long Island will be closed as a precaution during the Labor Day holiday period.

The measure is designed to protect public health from potentially contaminated shellfish associated with increased boating activity.

The DEC also is reminding boaters to use pump-out facilities to help protect the waters around Port Jefferson Harbor, Oyster Bay Harbor and the Sand Hole.

The shellfishing restrictions are in effect from Saturday through Thursday, Sept. 4.
