PORT TOWNSEND, Wash. (AP) - A Jefferson County sheriff’s deputy with 21 years on the job will serve as acting sheriff when the current sheriff resigns to take a police chief’s job.

The Peninsula Daily News reports (https://is.gd/09dg1T ) Chief Criminal Deputy Joe Nole will take over from Tony Hernandez on Friday.

Hernandez is taking over as police chief in Milton, a town of 7,000 residents about 8 miles northeast of Tacoma.

He told the Jefferson County Board of Commissioners for 14 years and looked to him for guidance. Hernandez says Nole is the kind of officer who sees problems and implements solutions without prompting.

The three commissioners unanimously approved Nole’s interim appointment.
