BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - A New York woman convicted of suffocating her 8-year-old daughter has received the maximum prison sentence of 25 years to life.

Candace Cartagena (cart-uh-HAYN’-yah) was sentenced Tuesday in Erie County Court, where she was found guilty of second-degree murder last month.

Authorities say the 35-year-old suffocated Bianca Cartagena in 2010 following the end of her marriage. Her attorney had argued the girl died of natural causes from an enlarged heart.

At her sentencing, Candace Cartagena said she would not admit to a crime she didn’t commit.
