SANDY HOOK, N.J. (AP) - A teenager has died after he was rescued while swimming at the Sandy Hook Gateway National Recreation Area in New Jersey.

Spokeswoman Daphne Yun says the 17-year-old disappeared while swimming off an unguarded beach between areas C and D after 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Yun says nearby lifeguards were able to rescue and resuscitate Sarnad Rizvi of South Plainfield.

Rizvi was taken to Monmouth medical Center, where he died early Wednesday.

Officials have advised of dangerous rip currents generated as Hurricane Cristobal passes far off the coast.
