PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel plans to host a town hall on the Defense Department’s role in national security at the U.S. Naval War College in Rhode Island.

Hagel will answer questions from students, faculty and staff at the Sept. 3 event in Newport.

Hagel had previously said he would visit the city that day for an event about innovation and technology in the defense arena.

He will give opening remarks at the inaugural “Defense Innovation Days.” Gov. Lincoln Chafee, U.S. Sen. Jack Reed and other members of the state’s congressional delegation also plan to attend.

The Southeastern New England Defense Industry Alliance is hosting the event to bring policymakers and industry representatives together to discuss new trends within the defense industry and technologies being developed and deployed to military forces.
