ROSEBURG, Ore. (AP) - The director of the Roseburg Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Southern Oregon has announced her retirement.

Carol Bogedain, 62, said she planned to work at the hospital for three years, and that time will be up in January, the Roseburg News-Review reported (https://bit.ly/1sPKAe9 ).

Her written statement makes no mention of the scrutiny Veterans Affairs hospitals around the country are under because of long wait times for medical care and falsified data, and local critics said they didn’t believe she was involved in that.

Bogedain, 62, came to Roseburg from Salem, Virginia, in 2011 amid debate over the closure of the Oregon facility’s intensive care unit two years earlier - a dispute that continues.

Veterans argue that having an ICU would improve patient safety and it might have prevented the 2013 death of a man who fell ill after an operation and died of cardiac arrest in an ambulance on the way to the hospital in Springfield.

Bogedain defended the decision, saying the Roseburg unit saw too few patients for staff members to keep their skills sharp.

The rift between Bogedain and members of the Douglas County Veterans Forum widened when she walked out of a forum meeting in February and said she would no longer attend its monthly gatherings.

Bogedain announced her retirement in a statement that said January would mark her 39th year with the VA. She didn’t respond to requests for comment.

“I have worked at seven different facilities,” her statement said. “I chose a career in the VA because, in my estimation it has the noblest of all missions within the government and that is to provide the highest level of quality care to those who have given so much for our country.”

Jim Little, former president of the veterans forum, said he hopes veterans will be heard when Bogedain’s successor is chosen.

“I’m hoping we have a fresh start, that we get a director in there that will definitely take care of all the employees who are under him or her,” he said.
