METCALFE, Miss. (AP) - The town of Metcalfe is using a $462,000 grant to provide new houses to four local residents.

Mayor Corey Holmes tells the Delta Democrat-Times ( ) the town will tear down the old homes and rebuild on site. The money came from the Mississippi Development Authority.

To qualify, residents had to hold the deed to their house, have below a certain income level and the house must need immediate repairs, Holmes said.

Each new house will be built of brick, with at least three bedrooms and two full baths and be outfitted with new appliances.

Holmes says he expects the new houses to be ready by Christmas.

Indianola-based Brown and Associates is in charge of vetting bids to build the houses.
