Republican Congressman Justin Amash won his primary in Michigan’s 3rd district tonight, edging out mainstream challenger Brian Ellis.

Rep. Amash won by 55 percent to Mr. Ellis’ 45 percent, much closer figures than recent polling, which suggested a gap of 20 points.

Mr. Ellis conceded the race around 10:30 p.m., according to local TV station WZZM.

The primary had represented a reversal in the pattern of Republican primaries in many other contests, as Mr. Ellis, the challenger, held a much more mainstream platform, and Rep. Ellis carried strong tea party credentials.

Rep. Amash now faces Bob Goodrich in the November general election.
