BOWERS BEACH, Del. (AP) - Delaware State Police have charged a man with assaulting a police dog after he hit the animal while it was searching for him in an attic.

It happened about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at a home in Bowers Beach. Police were looking for a man for a probation violation.

Troopers say an officer and his dog, Ripper, were searching for the man in the attic when the dong found him. Officers say the man struck the dog on the neck, causing the animal to fall on his back.

Police say the dog jumped back and began biting the man’s leg. Troopers took the man into custody.

Thirty-three-year-old Robert N. Berry of Ellendale was treated at a hospital for bite wounds and was charged with assault on a law enforcement canine.
