AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - The City Council has approved a $1.25 million settlement with the three children of a man fatally shot last year during a bank robbery investigation.

The council on Thursday approved the settlement, the largest in city history, in the death of Larry Eugene Jackson Jr.

Authorities have said former Detective Charles Kleinert wanted to question Jackson after he tried to enter the locked doors of a bank while a robbery was under investigation in July 2013. After Jackson tried to flee, the pair struggled and Jackson was shot in the neck.

Kleinert earlier this year was indicted on a manslaughter charge. Conviction of the second-degree felony is punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

Another lawsuit filed by Jackson’s mother and stepfather is pending in federal court.
