REDLANDS, Calif. (AP) - A Southern California high school is suspending its cheerleading program after a photo circulated on social media showing team members pretending to be gang members.

The photo first posted to Instagram by a senior at Redlands East Valley High School shows 13 cheerleaders wearing baggy jeans and other gang-style clothing while holding fake weapons and giving hand signals. It soon circulated widely on Facebook.

The Redlands Daily Facts (https://bit.ly/1pZnShd ) reports that the school district suspended the cheerleading team after a community meeting Wednesday.

School principal John Maloney says the cheerleaders’ adult advisers gave them permission to dress up in gang attire as part of a team-building exercise.

Maloney says when administrators learned about the picture they asked the team to pull photos off the internet, and that was quickly done.
