CAMERON, La. (AP) - An inmate who escaped from the Cameron Parish jail is back in custody.

Sheriff Ron Johnson says Billy James LaCombe, 45, of Lake Arthur, was arrested Wednesday morning and booked with simple escape. He had been in jail on three counts each of felony theft and felony trespass.

Johnson tells The American Press (https://bit.ly/1okVmKg ) LaCombe escaped late Tuesday out of an unlocked door, went down a flight of stairs then through an open spot in the wall. The wall has since been fixed but an investigation continues into how LaCombe managed to get out, Johnson said.

The sheriff said LaCombe planned the escape and had his girlfriend, Karen Guidry, 22, and brother, Wilfred LaCombe Jr., 49, waiting to pick him up. A deputy spotted their car at a Cameron motel Tuesday night and authorities arrested both on charges of assisting an escape and conspiracy to assist an escape.

It was not immediately known if any of the suspects had an attorney.
