ITTA BENA, Miss. (AP) - Former Itta Bena police chief Ted Washington is now a Leflore County sheriff’s deputy.

The town of about 2,000 residents shuttered its police department at the end of July in a cost-saving move, turning over law enforcement duties to the Leflore County Sheriff’s Department.

Sheriff Ricky Banks says Washington will be assigned to patrol the whole county with occasional trips to Itta Bena.

Banks tells The Greenwood Commonwealth (https://bit.ly/1sx7j0I ) he plans to hire two more deputies to cover the added duties of policing the small municipality.

Itta Bena previously employed about six patrol officers and six dispatchers in its department.

Banks says the added patrols in the town have gone smoothly so far.

Itta Bena is paying $229,000 per year to the county to cover the cost of law enforcement.
