HAMILTON, Ohio (AP) - A southwest Ohio sheriff says no criminal charges will be filed in a fatal dog attack earlier week - but the animal likely will be euthanized.

A statement from Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones says 59-year-old Cindy Whisman of Madison Township was mauled Monday in her backyard, suffering multiple injuries to her face, neck and body.

Whisman’s daughter, Julie Whisman, owns the dog, which was described as a pit bull. She voluntarily turned it over to the sheriff’s office, and Jones says it likely will be put down. He said DNA tests will try to better determine the dog’s breed.

Jones says no one knows why the dog attacked the woman, who was in the backyard of the home with her grandson. He was not injured.
