GREENWICH, Conn. (AP) - A 16-year-old Greenwich High School student killed in a boating accident on Long Island Sound was a gymnast and honor student who was well-liked in her school, the superintendent of schools says.

The accident that killed Emily Fedorko on Wednesday also seriously injured an unidentified 15-year-old girl who is recovering, a police spokesman said.

Greenwich police say Fedorko was struck by the propeller of a boat towing her and the other girl who were tubing. Two other teenage girls were operating the boat.

The reason the boat stopped was not known and police and state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection are investigating. The girl operating the boat was licensed, authorities said.

“This is a devastating loss for community,” Superintendent of Schools William McKersie said. “She was loved by students and teachers.”

Twenty school district staff members and others are involved in counseling and support for victims’ families and others, he said.

The Greenwich Time reports (https://bit.ly/1slyQ3b ) Greenwich Harbor Master Ian MacMillan said the accident was the first boating fatality in Greenwich waters in more than 20 years.

Police spokesman Lt. Kraig Gray said he did not believe alcohol played a role.
