LOS ANGELES (AP) - A registered sex offender has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for kidnapping an 8-year-old girl who was walking with her family in a Southern California park.

The Los Angeles Times reports (https://lat.ms/1sAcP1F ) 28-year-old Robert Sok pleaded no contest to kidnapping the girl and failing to update his sex offender registration annually.

The Long Beach resident was sentenced Wednesday.

Prosecutors said the girl had been walking ahead of her mother and grandmother at Hillbrook Park in Signal Hill in January when Sok grabbed her and placed his hand over her mouth.

The girl screamed and the girl’s grandmother struck Sok with a water bottle, forcing him to release her.

He was arrested a few blocks away.
