ST. CHARLES, Mo. (AP) - A 26-year-old St. Charles man has been sentenced to 12 years behind bars in connection with a sexual assault of his former wife.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch (bit.ly/1us281z ) reports that Hermes Mendez was sentenced Monday after an earlier conviction for felonious restraint and forcible sodomy.

A jury found Mendez guilty of tying up his then-20-year-old wife with her shoelaces, a phone charger cord and a cable in March 2013. Police say he then forced her into a bathroom at their home and held her head underwater in a bathtub before the sex assault, which occurred while two small children were in the home. The victim has since divorced Mendez.
