HALIFAX, N.C. (AP) - A man has been arrested in the shooting death of a 15-year-old near Weldon, Halifax County authorities said Thursday, in a case that may be related to the killing of a 2-year-old girl.

Sheriff Wes Tripp said 19-year-old Semaj Tojuan Clanton of Garysburg is charged with murder in the death of 15-year-old Keyon Garner on Monday. Clanton is jailed without bond and it was not immediately clear if he has an attorney.

Authorities say Garner was walking with a group when two people emerged from a wooded area and began shooting.

Clanton also faces two counts of attempted murder for the shootings of two other people with Garner at the time.

Tripp said he believes the shooting is related to the death of a 2-year-old who was shot several hours later as she slept in her home not far from the scene of Garner’s shooting. While he said investigators have identified a motive, he declined to elaborate.

Also, Tripp said his deputies are working to calm community fears because of the ages of the shooting victims.

“Emotions are high,” he said. “In an attempt to help with those emotions, we’ve implemented some additional tactics in that area to deter additional acts of violence.”

Tripp said more arrests are pending the ongoing investigation.
