WAUSAU, Wis. (AP) - Accused prostitutes and their customers have been given municipal citations in Wausau for the first time, instead of being charged criminally.

The City Council recently adopted an ordinance that sets up the fine. Police Lt. Matt Barnes says the citations give officers a chance to “counsel” offenders.

The police department recently set up a prostitution sting, posting ads on websites like Backpage. Barnes says 61 people responded and eight men actually arranged to meet a prostitute.

The Daily Herald Media (https://bit.ly/1otVKRU ) says the citations include fines of between $2,000 and $5,000.
