NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Authorities have charged a 19-year-old North Charleston woman with murder following the stabbing death of a man earlier this week.

Charleston media outlets report that Akara Edwards surrendered to authorities late Wednesday. She is charged in the Monday stabbing death of 22-year-old Alex Whipple.

North Charleston police spokesman Spencer Pryor says a woman told investigators her boyfriend came to her home with a hammer and used it to damage a car.

Pryor said the woman told officers she walked outside with a knife and asked the man to leave. The woman told police the man charged at her, and the knife ended up in his chest.

It was not immediately known if Edwards had an attorney.
