BLUFFTON, Ind. (AP) - A northeastern Indiana high school athletic director is hospitalized in critical condition after being struck by a sport utility vehicle driven by the school’s principal.

The Bluffton News-Banner reports (https://bit.ly/1u6Fxdx ) 43-year-old Bluffton High School athletic director Steve Thompson underwent two surgeries at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne to relieve pressure on his brain after his head struck the pavement Thursday morning.

Police say Principal Steve Baker was driving from the middle school to the high school following a meeting when Thomas tossed an athletic bag on the hood of Baker’s vehicle in a “friendly exchange.” Baker swerved as Thompson stepped toward the vehicle, clipping Thompson’s legs.

Police are continuing to investigate.
