PHOENIX (AP) - A man accused of hitting a Phoenix bar employee in the head with a hammer is in custody.

Phoenix police said Thursday that 30-year-old Matthew Eugene Alcala was booked on one felony count of aggravated assault and serious injury.

Authorities say Alcala was at Ice Pics Bar patio on McDowell Road near 32nd Street around 2:45 a.m. Wednesday asking for food and money.

The 38-year-old victim told the suspect to leave and tried to forcibly remove him.

Police say that is when Alcala allegedly struck the victim on the head with a hammer and then fled.

Alcala was located by police Wednesday night and positively identified by the victim.

The victim suffered a possible skull fracture but is expected to recover.
