ATLANTA (AP) - Atlanta’s zoo is joining others across North America to get people interested in the plight of African elephants.

Zoo Atlanta says it plans to hold activities to raise awareness, engage interest and inspire action for African elephants and their situation in the wild. The efforts are part of the 96 Elephants campaign. The zoo says Tuesday is World Elephant Day.

The zoo says the campaign takes its name from the estimated number of elephants slaughtered daily for their tusks in Africa.

Zoo Atlanta plans to kick off World Elephant Day early with Go Grey Day on Saturday. Visitors are encouraged to wear gray to show their support, and there will be a variety of activities centered around elephants.
