SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a decaying body was found this week in the Channel Islands.

The National Parks Service said Thursday that a marine biologist who was surveying the beach at Simonton Cove on San Miguel Island discovered the body on Tuesday.

Investigators said the body was in deteriorated condition, indicating it had been exposed to the elements for some time.

The mysterious death has led to an investigation involving federal and local authorities.

The Santa Barbara County coroner’s office will identify the deceased and determine the cause of death.
