WATFORD CITY, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota’s Transportation Department has opened the first four-lane segment of U.S. Highway 85 in the western oil patch.

The 14-mile stretch between Watford City and Alexander was opened to traffic on Friday. It marks the completion of the first phase of the four-laning project.

The highway is being widened between Watford City and Williston, at a cost of $300 million. Construction continues on the remaining 25 miles.

Transportation Director Grant Levi says more than 12,000 vehicles use the highway each day.
