SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - The Illinois State Fair is now officially open to the public.

Gov. Pat Quinn, Illinois Department of Agriculture officials and Illinois County Fair Queen Summer Robbins of Coffeen were at the Friday morning ribbon-cutting ceremony at the state fairgrounds in Springfield.

Quinn says the fair is an important part of the Illinois economy and an opportunity for residents to have fun.

The governor joked he “eats his way” across the fairgrounds every year.

The celebration of agriculture features livestock competitions, harness racing, concerts and carnival rides. It runs through Aug. 17.
