SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) - A man convicted of sexually assaulting and beating to death an 84-year-old woman 30 years ago has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

In June a jury found 60-year-old Richard S. Sandoval guilty of first-degree murder. Jurors also found the 1984 murder of Margaret Lenney was committed during a rape or attempted rape, which made Sandoval eligible for the life sentence. City News Service says he was sentenced on Friday.

Prosecutors said Lenney had fired Sandoval for shoddy painting work he’d done at her home.

Sandoval was a suspect from the first day of the investigation, but prosecutors didn’t think they had enough evidence to charge him until a DNA match decades later.
