HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) - Marshall University is welcoming a new class of medical students.

The school’s annual White Coat Ceremony will be held Friday night at the Joan C. Edwards Performing Arts Center in Huntington. At the ceremony, students will receive their white coasts, stethoscopes and medical instruments.

Marshall’s first White Coat Ceremony was held in 1996. School officials say the ceremony is considered a rite of passage for first-year students and is designed to instill the values of professionalism, humanism and compassionate care.
