MASON, Mich. (AP) - A Michigan man has been charged with ethnic intimidation in connection to an attack on a Muslim woman.

Twenty-nine-year-old Jonathan Deuel of Mason was also charged Thursday with misdemeanor assault and battery in the July attack. Ethnic intimidation is a felony punishable by up to two years in prison and up to a $5,000 fine.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations says three people attacked a 26-year-old woman in a Meridian Township parking lot July 19. It says they attempted to pull her dress and face veil off before knocking her down and shouting expletives at her.

Meridian Township Police Lt. Greg Frenger says the investigation hasn’t shown anyone else should be charged.

Deuel is in the Ingham County Jail on $25,000 bond. He has requested a court-appointed attorney.
