BEND, Ore. (AP) - A summer get-together sustained over four decades by the Snodgrass family of Portland and their friends has been cut short this year by a small wildfire in the Three Sisters Wilderness Area of Central Oregon.

The Bend Bulletin reports (https://bit.ly/1ojpt5P) about 50 people were at the weeklong campout along Cultus Lake, at a site reachable only by boat.

On Thursday afternoon, a black plume arose in the nearby wilderness, followed by white smoke and flames.

Not long after, deputies in boats pulled up to tell campers to leave.

Family friend Piper Stewart of Oregon City said the last boats carrying people and gear crossed the lake about 7:30 p.m.

Smokejumpers, helicopters and air tankers attacked the fire. Fire spokeswoman Kassidy Kern said it was soon “inside a box.”
