FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) - Authorities have released the identity of the man who disappeared while swimming in the Chena River in downtown Fairbanks.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports (https://is.gd/xIT6AM) 35-year-old Andrew John of Arctic Village was last seen under a bridge on the rain-swollen Chena River on Thursday.

The Tanana Chiefs Conference made the identification in a release, and Fairbanks police confirmed it.

Authorities say he and another man, identified by police as Robert Francis, decided to go swimming to escape the heat.

Francis was able to get out of the water, but John was last seen under the Wendell Street bridge and firefighters searched the area for hours in boats.

Volunteers continued the search for his body Friday.
