WAVERLY, Iowa (AP) - Fundraising for a Waverly dog park has gotten a big boost in the form of a $100,000 grant secured through a national competition.

About 200 people gathered at the city hall Thursday night for the online results of the PetSafe “Bark for your Park” competition. The city garnered more than 133,000 votes to beat out more than 1,000 communities around the country.

The pet product manufacturer in Tennessee sponsors the contest to build parks in communities with limited resources.

Residents of Waverly have worked for five years to raise about $16,000 for the park. City officials previously approved a four-acre plot on the southeast side of town.

The announcement puts park construction ahead of schedule. A city official says construction could start as early as the spring.
