RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Five Virginia teachers have been selected as state finalists for the 2014 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

State education officials say the award recognizes teachers who develop and implement high-quality instructional programs that improve student learning. It’s considered the nation’s top honor for mathematics and science teachers.

The Virginia nominees are: Barbara-Ann Adcock from Pocahontas Elementary in Powhatan, Susan Eckenrode from John Wayland Elementary in Rockingham County, Eric Imbrescia from Peak View Elementary in Rockingham County, Margret Journell from Eastern Elementary and Middle in Giles County and Ryan McKinney from The Langley School in McLean.

President Obama is expected to announce the 2014 national winners next year. Winners receive $10,000, a presidential certificate and a trip to the nation’s capital for a series of events.
