WALNUT, Calif. (AP) - Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies have shot and killed a gunman who wounded another officer during an earlier confrontation in the Walnut Park area.

Authorities said the 31-year-old suspect shot a transit police deputy in the arm when the deputy approached him around 4 a.m. Saturday.

Sheriff’s Deputy Lilian Peck says the deputy returned fire as the man ran away. She didn’t know whether he struck the man. He was found three hours later hiding in a trash bin about two blocks from the confrontation.

Peck said the man was fatally struck when he pulled a gun on deputies.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been released.

Investigators were trying to learn why the deputy first approached the suspect.
