PASCAGOULA, Miss. (AP) - A ceremony is scheduled Aug. 15 to designate a section of Mississippi Highway 63 in Jackson County as “Sgt. John E. Wells Memorial Highway.”

The designation was approved this year by the Legislature.

The one-mile designation begins at Freeman Road and extends south one mile to Ed Parker Road in the Big Point area.

The ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. at Davis Chapel located on Wade Big Point Road.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation will erect and maintain signs on the route.

Wells, a Pascagoula native, died June 4, 1970, in the Quang Ngai province of Vietnam. He was 20 years old when he died. According to the Vietnam Veteran Memorial Fund website, Wells was killed while alerting another soldier about the start of a mortar attack.
